Waiting List for "Surveying Fiberglass Boats"
Instructors: Susan Canfield
Winter 2008
Description: This is an introductory “freshman-level” foundation course. Students will gain an understanding of the marine surveyor’s role in performing condition and value surveys for yachts and small craft. They will become familiar with the regulations and industry standards that guide marine surveyors, and with the inspection tools surveyors commonly use. Just as a medical student studies human anatomy, an apprentice surveyor must become familiar with composite construction materials and methods, failure modes and repair techniques. Surveyors must also understand why and how corrosion occurs, and be able to recognize the various forms of corrosion commonly found in boats. Note: This is an online variant of Surveying Fiberglass Boats, a 5-day course offered by WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine.
Part One is an eight-week course that will provide this basic knowledge base and advice on finding mentors, acquiring continuing education and attaining surveyor certification and/or accreditation.
When students have completed Part One, they may also want to register for another eight weeks in Part Two so they can participate in online condition and value inspections. They will develop a familiarity with applicable regulations and industry standards and learn to recognize many of the problems and hazardous conditions most commonly found on fiberglass boats.
Note: REGISTRATION FEES FOR THIS COURSE ARE YET TO BE DETERMINED. WHILE IT IS FREE FOR YOU TO PRE-REGISTER, THE ACTUAL COURSE WILL NOT BE FREE!
